InfoComm 2019: The Best Events to Learn, Grow and Network

Posted on June 4, 2019

InfoComm is the perfect time for expanding your career — it provides fruitful networking, introduction to trends and opportunities to learn from experts in the field. Plus, the InfoComm schedule is filled with events that allow one more chance to learn and grow.

Here are some of the events we’re looking forward to the most at InfoComm 2019.

Sviatovid Projection from BARTKRESA

Sviatovid is a projection mapping event designed by studio BARTKRESA and presented by Avixa and Panasonic. After much success in Europe, Sviatovid is making its United States debut at InfoComm.

Displayed using 4K laser projectors, this was first premiered at ISE 2019. Studio founder Bart Kresa will also be giving two presentations on the art of projection mapping during the conference. He will discuss “Trends in Display and Light Technology” on June 13, and will explore “Live Event Projection Mapping: Creating the Transformative Immersive Experience” at TIDE, a mini-conference within InfoComm, on June 11.

According to Ilana Marks at Projection Lights & Staging News, Kresa’s projection and talks aren’t to be missed. “He has returned with high powered projectors, and an eye (or four eyes, in Sviatovid’s case) to the future of activating architecture, public spaces, and open minds with light and art.”

Opening Receptions

InfoComm is holding several networking receptions on Tuesday, June 11, from 7–9 p.m. at B.B. King’s Blues Club, Lafayette’s Music Room and Itta Bena. Companies like AudioXpress are already looking forward to the event.

“Enjoy live music, free drinks and food, and the opportunity to network with 2000 of your industry friends,” says Randi Cavitt, manager of exposition services at AVIXA.

For those who want to start out this event with networking opportunities, either of these opening receptions is a great option.

AVIXA Foundation 5K Walk/Run

For the more athletic among us, AVIXA is hosting its first-ever walk/run during this year’s InfoComm. It’s taking place on Friday, June 14, and proceeds are going toward resources that will attract and develop students for careers in AV.

AVIXA COO Heidi A. Voorhees expresses her excitement for the new event. “We’re excited to bring another fun, social experience to the week’s lineup: our first 5K Walk/Run. Participants will not only get their strides in, they’ll support the Foundation’s new and focused efforts to develop future AV professionals."

AVIXA Women’s Council Networking Breakfast

Once again, the AVIXA Women’s Council will be hosting its annual breakfast event on Thursday, June 13. This year, the discussion will be led by Christine Schyvinck, president and CEO of Shure Incorporated. The talk will focus on attracting and retaining women in the audiovisual and technology industries.

“Our industry needs to have more discussions about reaching women at a younger age – about junior high age – to show them what a career in technology looks like.”

Schyvinck explains her experience as a mechanical engineering student in the 1980s. In mostly male classes, she longed to see more women represented in the field. While she does note that there’s been progress, she says there’s still room to encourage more women in audiovisual and technology fields.

Young AV Professionals Reception

AVIXA has teamed up with Premier Mounts to host a Young Professionals Networking Reception. The event is intended to provide more growth opportunities for those early on in their career.

“Connecting them from the beginning of their careers can lead to industry-defining projects in the not too distant future,” says Curtis Rose, Premier Mounts marketing director.

This reception will be held at the Orange County Convention Center on Thursday, June 13. This event is free to attend and is open to all InfoComm attendees. Pre-registration is not required, and food and drinks will be provided. Young professionals are encouraged to come and connect with top industry professionals at this special event.

Diversity in AV Reception

AVIXA’s Diversity Council is on a mission to ensure that everyone feels welcome in this industry. To this end, they’ve created a Diversity in AV Reception that will allow people to network and learn how to get involved in supporting inclusion.

Charmaine Torruella, global services manager at Verrex, says the reception is one of the events she’s most looking forward to. She explains how, at her first InfoComm, she was the only black woman per 200 attendees.

“It can be a little daunting when you do not blend in, but realize that you are the audience/customer; the show is designed for you to do all the technology window-shopping possible in order to make the best AV determinations—to be in command of the experience.”

AV Tech Tour: Orlando Science Center

This brand new tour will take visitors behind the scenes at the Orlando Science Center, where they will see the museum’s exhibits and get a personal view of the use of technology and audiovisual equipment.

Attendees will learn how the museums use projection-mapping, how the dinosaurs come alive for the holidays, and what challenges and creative workarounds the team employs. Guests will also get to see The Hive, a new in-house makerspace and rapid prototyping facility, which is home to the Science Center’s collection of 3D printers, laser cutters and wood shop.

End Users Tour

End users — the people who manage AV systems for corporate, higher education, healthcare, hospitality, retail and any other industry uses — will get an early peek at the many technologies on display before the public. Sponsored by Peerless-AV, this event gives users an exclusive look into the technology that can assist them in their daily jobs.

AVIXA Members Early-Bird Exhibit Hall Tour

AVIXA members will also be able to see an exclusive tour of the show floor in this event sponsored by AV company Williams Sound. The early-bird exhibit hall tour will allow members to get a sneak peek at what’s there before the show opens. For members hoping to take part in this tour, it begins at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
